Survey question types matter more than you might think. Ask for a name, and a simple typing box fits. Ask how happy someone is, and star ratings work better than words. Picking the right type for each job makes your form easier to answer and gives you cleaner results.

Text questions: when you need words

These types collect typed answers:

• Short Text. A single line for names, titles, or quick facts.
• Long Text. A bigger box for paragraph answers, stories, or detailed feedback.
• Email. Collects email addresses and checks them automatically for mistakes like a missing @ sign.
• Phone. A field shaped for phone numbers.
• Number. Accepts only numbers, and you can set a minimum, a maximum, and a step size.
• Website. For web addresses and links.
• Date. Opens a date picker, and you can optionally limit the range so people cannot pick a start date after the end date.

Use these whenever the answer has to come from the person, not from a list.

Choice questions: when answers live on a list

When people should pick rather than type:

• Yes/No. The simplest switch of all, perfect for quick gates like "Have you shopped with us before?"
• Multiple Choice. One answer from several options. You can add an optional Other choice so people can write their own answer, and you can shuffle the order of choices to keep things fair.
• Multiple Selection. Like multiple choice, but people can tick as many answers as apply, such as "Which days suit you?"
• Dropdown. One answer hidden inside a tidy menu. Best for long lists, like countries or job titles, that would fill the whole screen otherwise.
• Picture Choice. The options are images instead of plain text, which makes choosing fun and fast. Great for "Which design do you like?"

A good rule: few clear options mean choices beat typing every time.

Scales: measuring feelings and preferences

Numbers can capture opinions too:

• Rating. Star ratings with 1 to 10 points, your choice. A 10-point rating works like NPS style scoring, the method many businesses use to measure customer loyalty with one number.
• Opinion Scale. Rows of numbered steps with labels at each end, such as Strongly disagree to Strongly agree. Usually 5 or 7 steps. This is the classic rating scale question for agreement and satisfaction statements.
• Ranking. People drag options into their preferred order, like ranking three session topics from most to least wanted.

Scales turn fuzzy feelings into numbers you can compare across hundreds of answers.

Statement: a screen that asks nothing

The Statement type is a text screen placed between questions. It needs no answer. Use it to introduce a new section, explain why you are asking something personal, or give instructions halfway through. Small pauses like these keep longer forms feeling friendly.

Advanced types for special jobs

Three types handle the heavier lifting:

• File Upload. People attach documents or images. You can limit which file types are allowed and set a maximum size, so nobody sends you a giant video by accident.
• Legal/Consent. A checkbox that must be ticked, like "I agree to the terms." Required means required, so it protects both sides.
• Payment. Collect money at the end of the form through Razorpay, in Indian Rupees. Orders, deposits, and donations can happen right inside the form.
